Weather line and cancellations
How we decide cancellations, when the decision is made, and how you find out.
How to find out
- Text alert: every registered family is texted at the number on the account.
- The app: a banner appears on the home screen.
- This page is updated at the same time.
- The office phone recording is updated during office hours.
If you have not received a text and this page does not show a cancellation, the session is on.
When decisions are made
Weekday sessions: by 4:00 PM. Saturday morning games: by 7:00 AM. Saturday afternoon games: by 11:00 AM. We do not cancel earlier because Kansas City weather changes quickly. Lightning during a session: everyone leaves the field immediately and we wait 30 minutes after the last strike before resuming; if it has not cleared in 30 minutes the session is called.
What cancels a session
- Lightning within ten miles
- Heavy rain or standing water on the fields
- Heat index above 105
- Wind chill below 15
- Air quality index above 150
- Snow or ice on the fields or the parking lot
Light rain, cold, and mud do not cancel. Dress your child for the weather.
Make-ups
Cancelled outdoor sessions are made up in the two weeks after the scheduled season end. Indoor sessions at the sports center are rarely cancelled; if the building closes for snow, the session is added to the end of the season. We do not refund for weather cancellations; make-ups are the remedy.
Field status
Kansas City Parks may close a field for conditions even when weather is fine. Field closures are handled the same way as weather cancellations.
